Clifford "Cliff" Fox Obituary

Clifford “Cliff” Fox

May 4, 1949 – June 13, 2024

It is with heavy hearts, we announce the sudden passing of Cliff, who was taken too soon.

Cliff was born to Margretta “Gretta” and Roland Fox and grew up in Birch River along with his siblings: Roletta, Kathy, Brind and Dessa at their family farm.

He went on to attend the University of Winnipeg and attained his Bachelor of Arts (Hons) Degree with “Distinction” with Philosophy as his major. While at university, Cliff met and married his wife, Donna, and while in Winnipeg their son Josh was born.

After university he became a lifelong learner and pursued a career that enabled him to provide training and education for many people wherever it was needed. Initially he worked for a government program called “M.A.N.W.A.P” (a work activity project) that led to living in Dauphin, Camperville/Duck Bay, Crane River and Barrows, Manitoba. In each community he became very involved with people, learning their culture and made many friends through baseball and other community events.  His next stop was as an Industrial Arts teacher at Rossignol High School in Ile-a-la Crosse, SK. where his students built a log cabin.

Finally, he returned to Swan River in the 80’s, where he met his mentor and colleague, the late Elbert Chartrand for whom the Friendship Centre in Swan River was renamed. Together they brought the Swan River Life Skills Project and later, the Swan River Adult Education Program to town. Through these programs and with his encouragement, Cliff touched many of his students’ lives for the good.

Along the way, Cliff went back to his roots and set up a grain farm in the Durban area.

Cliff was also known for his love of tennis, badminton and pickleball. He, along with his friend and doubles partner, Larry Kooistra, formed the Tennis Club in town and travelled in many tournaments. Their highlight was winning the gold medal in men’s doubles at the Manitoba Summer Games in 1988. Eventually Cliff became interested and loved to play pickleball and made many friends. Unfortunately, he played his last game in November, 2023, when his illness became apparent.

Cliff is survived by his loving wife, Donna, his son, Josh, and his sister, Dessa Hockley (Larry), along with many relatives, nieces and nephews.

Special thanks to Elbert Chartrand Friendship Centre, Larry & Julie Kooistra, Shannon Gauthier and the doctors and nurses at the Swan Valley Health Centre for their support and care.

A memorial service will be held July 10, 2024 at 2:00 p.m. from the Chapel of Paull Funeral Home with Reverend Andy Gilkinson officiating. A reception will follow at Elbert Chartrand Friendship Centre following the service.

Should friends so desire, donations in Cliff’s memory may be made to the A.L.S. Society or a charity of their choice.

“Although our hearts are heavy, we will celebrate Cliff’s life and find comfort that he is watching over us.”
