Elizabeth Garrow Obituary

Elizabeth (Dolly) Doris Garrow nee. Leask aged 72 years, wife to James B Garrow of Birch River, MB, passed away peacefully on February 18, 2021.

Elizabeth (Dolly) was born June 27, 1948 in Sapotaweyak Cree Nation. She was the daughter to the late Alfred & Sarah Leask nee Moore. Elizabeth (Dolly) grew up in Pelican Rapids, moving to Birch River to attend school. As a young woman, Elizabeth (Dolly) moved to Winnipeg, where she held many different jobs, including being a Nurses Aide. After encouraging her children and many others to continue with their education, Elizabeth (Dolly) graduated in 2000 from college with her Educational Assistant diploma with honours.

Shortly after moving to Winnipeg, she met the love of her life, James B Garrow. They lived in Winnipeg, Red Deer, Edmonton and later moved to Birch River in the late 1990’s. Together, they had two children, however, raised numerous others, including Nodin Paul, Cody Pierre, her niece Chastity Leask, her nephew Daniel Leask and her grandson Nathaniel Paul.

James and Elizabeth’s home was open to anyone and most would stop by on their travels for a quick coffee and visit. They enjoyed being around friends and family.

Elizabeth (Dolly) was survived by her husband James B Garrow, her son James G (Toni) of Minintonas, MB, and her daughter Claudette of Winnipeg, Mb; brothers Norman (Margaret), Donald aka Clinton, Donnie (Flora); sisters Caroline, Louise (Brian); grandchildren, Alexis, Josh, Nathaniel, Nevyn, Aceyn, Bushra, Abdullaa and Yahya: and numerous nieces and nephews.

Elizabeth (Dolly) is predeceased by brothers Dennis, Garfield, Russell, Patrick, Hughie; sister Rose Marie; brother-in-law Clarence.

Elizabeth (Dolly) had a wonderful life, full of love and happiness. She will be missed by many.

My sister Liz was my inspiration, my mentor. She was the first in our family to value education. She wanted a different life for her family and worked hard all her life to achieve this. From this feisty little woman, our family dynamics have changed. We now have people in our family that graduated high school, community colleges and university degrees. My nieces, cousins say she was their inspiration. I thank you, dear sister for the wonderful person you were. You gave all you could during your lifetime here on earth. It is with deep regret I have to let you go and join our relatives who are waiting for you. Hug our mom for me when you reach that golden shore. I’ll hold you forever in my heart dear sister until we meet again. You truly were the wind beneath my wings. Love, your sister Caroline.

A memorial service will be held at a later date.
