Goodie Hanson Obituary

With much appreciation for their beautiful lives, we acknowledge the passing of our beloved parents, grandmother, grandfather spouse and friend. Goodie passed away on August 27th, 2022 at their family home and Morley on September 16th, 2022 at the Swan Valley Health Centre. While we know that Goodie and Morley were two separate people, much of their lives were lived together and through their passing being only weeks apart it speaks to the deeply woven devotion shared between them.

Gudrun “Goodie” Ingeborg Hanson was born on June 28th, 1949 in Berlin, Germany to the late Gerhard and Inge Meinel. She immigrated to Canada with her parents and sister Elke in 1954 settling in Winnipeg, Manitoba before moving to Thompson, Manitoba. Goodie received her early education in Winnipeg and then continued her schooling in Thompson, Manitoba where she met Morley and started their life together.

Morley Allen Hanson was born at Hunter’s Nursing Home in Swan River, Manitoba to the late Clifford and the late Edith Hanson on February 21st, 1947. He grew up in the Big Woody District and received his education there.

On December 12th 1967 Morley and Goodie celebrated a wedding and remained together for the next 54 years. They grew their family and welcomed three children into their lives; a daughter, Shannon Settee in 1967 and two sons, Chris Hanson in 1970 and Steven Hanson in 1978.

Over the years of raising their children, moving a few times, and being employed they lived and worked at a variety of places. In 1979 Morley and Goodie settled in Swan River where they remained for the rest of their time serving in the local community. Morley is known for being one of the more adept meat cutters the valley has ever seen. He worked for Red and White, Cox's, Valley Meat Packers and opened his own shop in 1997, calling it Triple M Meats. Morley’s meat shop was open until 2013 when due to his health he unwillingly had to retire and close the shop. Goodie served in the retail industry in the Swan Valley community and tried her hand in a few different businesses over the years. She worked at the Nelson Hotel, Direct Liquidation, alongside her husband at Triple M Meats and most recently at Giant Tiger.

Goodie and Morley were proud community members who gained many friends throughout the years. Morley enjoyed a love of all sports; except for soccer, with major appreciations for baseball, hockey, bowling, curling, pool, as well as, joining in on NFL pools. He played first base with the Swan Valley Canadians and spearheaded Project Light the Diamond through many fundraisers like meat draws and rubber duck races. He not only loved playing ball but enjoyed coaching and umpiring as well. He liked to read a good western and share a visit over a coffee. Goodie was the same in that she loved to take part in a wholesome coffee visit and shared a love of curling and enjoyed bowling and supporting Morley in his love of baseball. She was a skilled gardener and could often be seen on a walk through the town streets or on a romp with her sister and the dogs at the museum. She and Morley dearly loved all animals especially in later years, their two pups Bosley and Rider.

Goodie and Morley will be remembered for being caring and proud parents; and grandparents who looked forward to getting together with their grandchildren and great grand-children. We will not forget Morley’s sense of humour, quick wit and dash of sarcasm. We will always cherish Goodie’s big-beautiful smile, her energy and her affection for all.

Morley and Goodie are survived by: their children, Shannon (Lloyd) Settee, Chris (Dana) Hanson and Steven (Lana) Hanson, Goodie’s mother Inge Meinel and her sister Elke Berscheid; seven grandchildren, Jayson Allen, Justin Allen and Brenna Settee, Chayce Hanson, Tanner Hanson, Brett McNarland and Jordon Hanson, two great-grandchildren, Aiden Hickey and Jordyn Hickey-Allen; Morley’s sisters, Leone Sigurdson and Edna LeBeau and his brother Cam Hanson.

They were predeceased by: Morley’s parents, Clifford and Edith Hanson and his sister Karen Hanson and Goodie’s father Gerhard Meinel and her nephew Jeff Berscheid.

In keeping with Goodie’s wishes, cremation has taken place. A funeral service will be held for Goodie and Morley on Saturday, October 1st, 2022 at 11:00 AM from the St. James Anglican Church, Swan River, Manitoba with Pastor Bob Lewis officiating.
