Gordon Cowan Obituary

It is with great sorrow that the family announces the peaceful passing of Gord Cowan on Saturday February 24th, 2024, at Swan Valley Health Centre Swan River Manitoba.

Dad was predeceased by his parents Edwin and Coral, brothers Les and Charlie, and sisters Edna and Phyllis (Bid), and grandchildren Dylan and Scott.

Left to cherish his memory are sister Doreen and brother Stuart (Carole), sons Keith (Malvina), Gordon Jr, Stephen (Sherry), and daughters Cathy, Colleen (John), and Elizabeth (Fred), grandchildren Kari, Keith Jr, Melanie, Angela, Sara, Mathew, Jordon, Cassie, and Cohan, numerous great grandchildren, nieces and nephews, and great great grandchild Sawyer.

Dad was raised and attended school in Pretty Valley in the RM of Minitonas. He joined the Royal Canadian Air Force in 1951 and was posted to St. Margarets NB where he met and married our mother Ruby Harris and they had six children together.  He retired from the air force having served 22 years and after a divorce moved to Swan River in 1975.  Dad worked for the Town of Swan River as a Facilities Manager where he had met Carolle Brown who had recently lost her husband Jack.  They were married in July 1987and he inherited three stepsons, David (Charlene), Trevor (Karen), and Trenton (Helen) that dad loved as his own.

Gord retired from the Town of Swan River in 1993 but stayed very active in the community serving as president of the Agricultural Society, board member of the Golf Course and United Church, as well as volunteering for numerous causes that were near and dear to his heart.

Dad loved the Northwest Roundup, golfing trips with Carolle and friends, the Credit Union Oldtimers Hockey Club, travelling across Canada and the U.S., and especially big family get togethers.

Thank you, dad, for all the wonderful memories and all the family support you gave so freely. You will be sorely missed and always lovingly remembered.

In accordance with Gord’s wishes, cremation has taken place and a memorial service celebrating his life will be held at a later date - to be announced.

If family and friends so wish, donations in lieu of flowers may be made to St. Andrews United Church in Swan River.
