LENA STENBERG (NEE MAKICHUK)
Lena Stenberg of Swan River, Manitoba passed away peacefully in the Swan Valley Lodge, on September 11, 2022, at the age of 102 years.
Lena was born in Benito, Manitoba on February 20th, 1920, to Jacob and Anna Makichuk of Arran, Saskatchewan. She married Edwin Stenberg on July 31st, 1945, and they farmed in Alpine District until 1962, then moved to Swan River.
Lena worked at MacLeods Hardware store till 1985 when she retired. She was an outstanding employee at MacLeods and those were some of the favorite years of her life. She was very popular, and her love of people showed in the laughter and joking that kept her smiling all those years. After retirement she worked on call night shift at the female lockup with the RCMP until she quit to enjoy some travel with her sister Jean, and friends.
Her greatest love was her grandchildren and great grandchildren who were as devoted to her as she was to them. She loved music and she loved playing bridge. And we cannot ignore her love of cats. She had the good fortune to keep company with “Handsome” the resident cat at the Swan Valley Lodge. She felt right at home there with kitty. She was a kind, loving and generous lady with a wonderful sense of humor.
She leaves to mourn, her daughter Lynn (Clair)Byer of Maple Ridge, B.C. three grandchildren, Naomi (Blair) MacAulay of Sylvan Lake, AB, Melissa Ballard of Edmonton, AB, [Brent of Swan River, MB] Travis Stenberg of Red Deer, AB, great grandchildren Liam and Jessica MacAulay of Sylvan Lake, AB. Former daughter in law and special friend Kathy Child [Tony] of Swan River, MB, Cousin Lorna Spicer of Minitonas, MB, as well as many nieces and nephews.
Lena was predeceased by her husband Edwin, son Raymond, her father Jacob, mother Anna, brothers Dmetro, Bill, John, and sister Jean and infant Mary.
Our thanks to the nurses and staff of the Swan Valley Lodge who were wonderful, caring, and helpful to Lena and the family.
In keeping with Lena’s wishes, cremation has taken place. Lena will be laid to rest with her husband at the family columbarium niche at Heritage Memorial Gardens, Swan River, Manitoba.
