Phyllis Evhenia Kowch was born in Canora on June 18th 1945. She attended Lake Helen, a country school close to the village of Hyas, SK. From 1951 to 1954 she walked to school in the spring and fall. In winter she rode in a taboggan pulled by one horse, which her other brother drove. 1954 to 1959 she rode the warm school bus with her older sister and younger brother. At 10 years of age, she was member of the Hyas 4H Garden Club. In 1961 she fell in love, got married… having a son March 14th 1963 born in Canora, SK. During this time period she worked as a telephone operator in Norquay, SK. In 1969 she graduated with a Nursing Assistant Certificate at SIAST (Saskatchewan Institute of Applied Arts and Science) in Saskatoon, SK. She lived in an apartment there with her husband and son. That summer/fall she took her practicum in Melville, SK. For the next 3 years she decided to be a stay at home farm wife close to Arran, SK. and raise her son. From 1977 to 1983 she moved to Regina, SK. to work as a Nurses Aid on pediatrics. In 1983 she moved to Snow Lake, MB. and carried on her health care career as a First Responder for Snow Lake Ambulance Service and CASR (Canadian Air Search and Rescue). She also taught first aid for St. John Ambulance. She later remarried in the late 1980s. She was blessed with her first granddaughter in 1987. In 1991 they settled down in Norquay, SK. She continued to teach CPR in this community, and was a Teachers Aid at Norquay School for many years. Here she raised her 3 step-children, and later her step-granddaughter. She grew a very large garden, and attended the Norquay United Church. Her saskatoon/rhubarb pie and cinnamon swirl loaf were family favorites. She loved traveling and has been to many places in Canada, United States, and the Philippines. In 2009 her first granddaughter married and she was fortunate to be given a great grand-daughter through marriage. In 2012 her son was married and the family grew more. She later relocated to Pelly, SK. in 2012. In 2015 and 2016 she was blessed with 2 great-grandsons born in Yorkton, SK. She always had a passion for family history and traditions, including cooking authentic Ukrainian meals. She loved dancing and being involved in her community. She found joy and companionship taking square dancing lessons, and dancing and the Pelly Jamboree. She was a member of the Pelly Happy Hearts for many years and attended the Pelly United Church. In 2020 as her health began to fail, she moved to Yorkton, SK. to be closer to health care services. She spent her last 3 years at the Yorkton District Nursing Home. Phyllis passed away on Jan 3rd, 2025 at the age of 79. She will be remembered forever by family and friends. Phyliis Evhenia Kowch was survived by her siblings: Orest (Barb) Kowch of Hamilton, ON., Mandry (Sharon) Kowch of Regina, SK., and Nestor (Evelyn) Kowch of Strasburg, SK. Children: Dale (Denise) Cazakoff of Durban, MB. Grandchildren: Angelina (Paul) Kabatoff of Wroxton, SK. Great-grandchildren: Clay Kabatoff and Kole Kabatoff. Step-Children: Phil Renaud of Kelowna, BC., Theresa, and Cory. Step-grandchildren: Nicole Renaud of Calgary, AB., Christina, Robert, Joshua, and Jonathan. Step-great-grandchildren: Aleah (Dillion) Kabatoff of Maryfeild, SK. and Morgon Renaud. Nieces and nephews: Donna, Bernadette, Raymond, Cameron, Garnet, Joann, Cheryle, Scott, Darrol, Kerri, Bob, Miles, Dean, Ben, Lila, Eugene, Lindon, Michelle, Karen, Rob, Kathy, Rick, Jeffery, and Kristina. And many great nieces and nephews. Phyllis was predeceased by her parents: John & Mary Kowch. Siblings: Paul (Madelyn) Kowch, Michel (Margaret) Kowch, Elizabeth (Peter) Malanowich, Unemy Kowch at birth, Eugene (Shirley) Kowch, Violet (Adolph) Zarowny, and Zorria or “Suzanne” Kowch at infancy. Nephews and nieces: Larry Malanowich, Sherlyn-lee and Michael Kowch.
A graveside service will be held on Saturday, July 5th, 2025 at 11:00AM(Sask time), at the Greenwood Cemetery, Pelly, Saskatchewan with Reverend Velda Dahlin officiating.
Cremation has taken place.
