Sarah Vopni (Waschenfelder)
September 23, 1925 – November 26, 2025
Peacefully on November 26, 2025, our beloved Aunt Sarah passed away at the age of 100 years in Swan Valley Lodge. Sarah was predeceased by her parents Ludwig and Margaret Waschenfelder and her parents-in-law Dorie and Helen Vopni, her husband Verne Vopni, and her siblings Jacob Martha, Mary, Millie, Margaret, Pauline, Anna, and twin sisters Selma and Dora. Sara was born in Rhein, Saskatchewan and later moved to Selkirk, Manitoba. She received her education in both Rhein and Selkirk and the University of Winnipeg, which led to her long teaching career. Her first teaching job was at Portage Creek School, near Portage la Prairie. There she boarded with the Cuthbert family. She then moved on to a teaching position near Kenville, Manitoba. There she boarded with Lottie and Harry Lumex. It was during that time that she met and married her soulmate Verne Vopni, and together they farmed for many years in the Harlington district. Later in life, they moved to their home in Swan River but often went back to spend time on their farm.
Sarah was a very kind and gentle lady; she was very intelligent and had a fantastic memory which served her well until the day she passed. She loved to read, especially her bible, and play crossword puzzles. She loved to cook and was famous for her roast beef dinners. She so loved her Winters spent in Nanoose Bay on Vancouver Island, but mostly she loved her long quiet walks on the farm. Her famous words were “It’s all in God’s hands.”
Left to cherish her memory are her twin Guardian sons, Thomas Ramsey (Joyce) of Regina, Saskatchewan, and Patrick Ramsey (Jackie) of Brandon, Manitoba. A dear sister-in-law Lorraine Lopston (George Struck), whom she taught in grade 3 as Miss Waschenfelder and Grade 4 as Mrs. Vopni. She also leaves behind many cherished nieces, nephews, and cousins.
In keeping with Sarah’s wishes, cremation has taken place and she will be laid to rest at a later date in the Riverside Cemetery in Harlington.
Paull Funeral Home and Crematorium are honoured to have served the family.
