Reginald Metcalfe Obituary

Reg passed away suddenly on March 6, 2021 at the Swan Valley Health Centre. He was born in Swan River, Manitoba on September 28, 1948, to Orville and Nellie Metcalfe, and grew up on the family farm near Bowsman, MB.

Cherishing his memory and life, is the love of his life and soul mate of fifty years, Connie; his four children, Denise Filipchuck (Roger Ell), Greg Metcalfe, Jarett Metcalfe (Karen Kasprik), Kristin Metcalfe (Craig Kepron) and son-in-law, Kelly Filipchuck; as well as his six grandchildren Nicole, Justin and Tyler Filipchuck, Jack and Katelyn Metcalfe, and Adam Metcalfe Kepron. Reg is also survived by his three siblings, Janice Hunt, Gaylene (Dave) Pearce and James Metcalfe, as well as his sisters-in-law, Lorraine (Albert) Pope, Vivian (Dave) Martinussen and Sheila Dubreuil and numerous nieces and nephews. Reg was predeceased by his parents Orville and Nellie Metcalfe, mother and father in-law, John and Elsie Dubreuil and brother-in-law John Wayne (Buzz) Dubreuil.

Reg was passionate about his family and farm. He cared deeply for them and was very proud of them. Reg was a big supporter of his children as they pursued their careers, relationships and established homes and families of their own. Reg was a wonderful father and grandfather, and   enjoyed spending time with his children and grandchildren. He loved taking his oldest grandchildren, who grew up in Swan River, out into the fields and teaching them about farming. With his youngest grandchildren, in Winnipeg and Vancouver, he could hardly wait for his daily dose of new pictures and videos.

For over 50 years, Reg enjoyed a very successful farming career. In the early years, working side by side with his father, Orville, at their farm near Bowsman and later, with his wife Connie. He loved teaching his children about farming, equipment operation and maintenance and patiently helped them learn. For Reg, there was no such thing as retirement. He loved his farm and loved farming with his son Greg and was actively doing what he loved until the end.

Reg was an especially gifted mechanic with a natural engineering ability and was always pulling apart machines and putting them back together. He also enjoyed building computers. Reg loved to solve problems and there was never a challenge he couldn’t solve. When he got stumped, he would simply sleep on it and wake up with the right solution in the morning.

Reg loved spending time at Whitefish lake with his family. He would spend countless hours with them water skiing, tubing, and talking with them by the campfire at night. Years later, Reg and Connie built a cabin there, where they finished much of the interior work on their own. Reg   enjoyed being involved with the Whitefish Lake Cottage Association and was the Secretary/Treasurer for many years, until his passing. Reg and Connie lived at the lake much of the year, where Reg loved to go boating, ATV’ing, and snowmobiling. He enjoyed watching the baby eagles grow up in the nest on the island. He also loved sitting on his balcony, quietly looking out upon the lake and admiring the sunset with his wife Connie by his side.
