Lucy Popoff of Benito, Manitoba passed away in the Swan Valley Health Centre on September 25th, 2015 at the age of 88 years. 

Lucy Popoff was born in the RM of Livingston on April 4th, 1927 to Peter and Anastasia Strelaeff. She received her education at Thunderbird. 

Lucy married her husband John on November 3rd, 1946. They lived in the Whitebeech area until 1962 and then moved into Benito where Lucy lived until the time of her passing. 

Lucy was a woman of many skills. At the age of 9 she started milking cows and she kept at that up until the age of 79. She loved to pick berries – wild and tame. One of her many talents was gardening and she was sure to grow enough for everybody.

Lucy was a proud member of the Benito and District Horticultural Society. She won many awards for the best fruit in show and placed on the court of honour with her grapes. She was also a member of the Dukhobor Society, she sang in the choir and the National Heritage Choir and was a member at Veregin Heritage Village as well as a board member of Manitoba Housing Authority. Lucy enjoyed her time as a member of the Benito & Area Drop In Centre where she made lunches and played cards. 

Lucy is survived by: her daughter Verna (Richard) Munson of Churchbridge, Saskatchewan; her son Edward (Brenda) Popoff of Benito, Manitoba; her grandchildren and great-grandchildren Gerratt, Bonnie, Nicholas, Wyatt, Walker and Bailey, Jason, Shannon,Hunter, Hannah and Paighton, Talvin, Pamela, Tyler, Serena, Danielle, Trevor, Sarah, Austin and Colton. 

She was predeceased by: her husband John in 1995; her father Peter in 1965; her mother Anastasia in 1979; her sister Mary Negrave in 1965; her brother Fred Strelaeff in 1983 (Vera in 2003); her twin granddaughters Christine and Cathleene Munson in infancy in 1967; her mother and father in law; her nephew John Strelaeff in 1998 as well as numerous more family members and in-laws.

A funeral service was held on Friday, October 2nd, 2015 at 2:00 PM from the Chapel of Paull Funeral Home, Swan River, Manitoba with Craig Larson officiating. Following the funeral service, Lucy was laid to rest next to her husband John at the Simonouka (“Bearhead”) Cemetery. A memorial meal and gathering was held at the Benito Rec Centre following the graveside service. 

Should friends and family so desire, memorial donations in Lucy’s honour may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation or to the Simonouka Cemetery (c/o Elaine Osatchuk, Box 92, Benito, Manitoba R0L 0C0).
